Happy National Doughnut Day 2013! Places to celebrate around the U.S.

Today is National Doughnut Day 2013. Happy Donut Day! This yearly food holiday is observed on the first Friday of June each year in the U.S. I’m sharing a list of doughnuts that I’ve enjoyed in the past year and hope it motivates everyone to eat more donuts! My first choice while searching for a good doughnut is a glazed doughnut, a hot glazed if available. Another one I seek out is in the form of maple and bacon doughnut. Check out some of my favorites below…

My favorite glazed and Hot Glazed doughnuts are at Donut King. Red Velvet and strawberry are good too. The Maple Bacon Donut Bar (not pictured) is a great pick too and if you don’t see it, just ask them to add bacon on top of the maple donut or maple bar.

I’ve had a few readers suggest Donuts To Go II in Sanford, a city North of downtown Orlando. They make a great large square donut which the owners says is a “Texas style” donut. The round glazed donut was really good and I must admit, I like these almost as much as Donut King’s glazed donuts. Maple Bacon Donut is a good pairing with smokey bacon and sweet maple glaze. The coconut is a good try if you like coconut, which I do.

Dough in Tampa is making a whole menu of doughnuts and baked goods worth stopping by for. The Maple Bacon Donut (eclair) is filled with pastry cream and a great take on a bacon doughnut. Pair it with their Bacon Latte and enjoy a unique take on coffee and doughnuts.

I started seeing photos online of good looking donuts in South Florida from my burger bro, BurgerBeast. He finally took me to Mojo Donuts on a recent trip down there. Both the glazed doughnut and Log Cabin Bacon Bar are good choices. Another one to order is the raspberry glazed donut.

A popular doughnut shop in NYC is Doughnut Plant. They have a lot of unique flavors, fillings, and glazes. I enjoyed coffee and doughnuts together on my visit, ordering the Coconut Cream and Peanut Butter & Blackberry Jam doughnuts. Both are great flavors and their coffee is good too.

Firecakes is a doughnut shop in downtown Chicago that I visited this week. The Maple Glazed Pineapple & Bacon Donut and the Glazed Donut (top) were awesome. The tanginess of the sliver of pineapple gave balance to the sweet and savory flavors of bacon and maple glaze. Not sure if I can eat a bacon donut again without some pineapple because it was so good. These were also smaller donuts and the perfect size to eat without overindulging. Other doughnuts we tried were the Coconut Cream and Lemon Meringue, both solid picks.

Currently I’m Chicago and there’s a list of donut shops I plan to visit. Doughnut Vault, Dat Donut, and Glazed & Infused are just a few I hope to visit while I’m here. I’ll add more photos if I can make it to any more today. Since doughnuts tend to sell out early in this city, I may miss out. I did find some sugar doughnuts at the Asian market this morning, check out the video and follow @Droolius on the Vine app:

Let me know what your favorite doughnut to eat is or your favorite donut shop you frequent in your city in the comments below. I’m always looking for more doughnuts to discover…
